Newburgh Named One of America’s “Most Dangerous” Cities

Annual Ranking Based on Crimes Reported Across the Us

The website Neighborhood Scout compiles statistics in many areas, including crime rates in neighborhoods across the US, for the purpose of valuing real estate. Each year, it publishes a list of the 100 cities in the US with the highest crime rates. The list is based on the violent crimes that have been reported in each city, though it also compiles the frequency of nonviolent and property crimes and provides probability ratings for how likely it would be for a resident to become the victim of one of these crimes. According to Neighborhood Scout, Bessemer, Alabama is the most dangerous city in the US in 2019. The chances of any one person becoming the victim of a violent crime in Bessemer are one in 34, and the chances of becoming the victim of a property crime there are one in 10.

Newburgh Ranked as Less Safe Than 91% of Us Cities

This year, Newburgh appeared on the Neighborhood Scout list as the 36th most dangerous city in the US. This is an improvement over its 2018 ranking as the nation’s 26th most dangerous city. A total of 1,154 crimes were reported in Newburgh in 2018. This means that there were almost 41 crimes per 1,000 residents. A total of 359 violent crimes were reported in Newburgh last year, resulting in a rate of 12.66 violent crimes per 1,000 residents. A Newburgh resident has a one in 79 chance of becoming the victim of a violent crime, whereas the average New York State resident has a one in 280 chance of becoming a violent crime victim. Property crimes are over twice as common; there is a one in 36 chance of becoming the victim of a property crime in Newburgh. The report also noted that there are 241 crimes per square mile in Newburgh. The national median number of crimes per square mile is 31.1.
